Community Calm
Mental Health Recovery Through Nature

We provide structured, non-clinical support for adults experiencing depression, anxiety, loneliness, social isolation or emotional distress. Using nature as the setting for recovery, our programmes bring people together in safe, confidential, supportive spaces where wellbeing can grow.

Sessions are designed to restore confidence, build resilience and create a sense of belonging. Activities include seasonal gardening, light conservation work, guided nature walks, creative practices and green skills learning. Each session is evidence-informed, low-intensity and accessible to all abilities.

Our approach is rooted in the World Health Organisation’s definition of health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” We believe recovery happens through meaningful activity, connection with nature and the support of peers.

We draw inspiration from the 12-step recovery model — emphasising community, accountability and personal growth: principles before personalities.

We currently run sessions across Berkshire, including an animal-assisted therapy farm in Maidenhead, a Wildlife Trust site in Windsor Great Park, and a co-designed Wellbeing Garden in Slough. Referrals are welcomed from NHS Social Prescribing Link Workers, community mental health teams and VCSE partners.

Our safe spaces

Community Calm operates across three carefully selected locations in Maidenhead, Windsor, and Slough. Each site has been developed to provide a safe, inclusive, and therapeutic environment, enabling individuals to benefit from structured nature-based and eco-therapy activities. All programmes are facilitated and supported by qualified professionals in their fields, and are underpinned by robust safeguarding protocols.

Our safeguarding standards and organisational governance are strengthened through our partnership with Slough CVS, which provides oversight, guidance, and support to ensure compliance with best practice in safeguarding, policies, and community health delivery.

Alongside eco-therapy, members can take part in arts and crafts, gentle yoga, and relaxation techniques, all within a calm and welcoming atmosphere. Sessions are supported by peer connection and open dialogue, giving members the opportunity to share challenges and struggles in a safe and non-judgemental space. Through this shared experience, individuals find understanding, encouragement, and a sense of belonging, helping them to recognise that they are not alone on their journey to recovery.

Our Maidenhead site is situated on a working farm, offering unique opportunities for animal-assisted and land-based therapeutic activities. Members engage in light animal care, gentle farmyard tasks, and outdoor activities that promote grounding, responsibility, and connection with the natural environment. The setting provides a structured yet calming atmosphere, guided by professionals with expertise in animal therapy, wellbeing, and eco-health, with safeguarding procedures embedded into all activities.

The Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) Windsor Great Park/Crown Estate

In collaboration with The Wildlife Trust, our Windsor Great Park site is located within a secluded and private area of the Crown Estate. This space offers a tranquil, natural environment away from public access, making it particularly well suited to individuals seeking privacy and quiet reflection. Sessions are supported by professionals in eco-therapy, yoga, and mindfulness, ensuring safe, restorative, and evidence-based practices.
